Enjoy Rio de Janeiro in summertime

27 December 2020

Summer has arrived in Rio de Janeiro! The summer solstice, the astronomical phenomenon that marks the beginning of summer, took place on Sunday, December 22nd in Brazil, as well as for the entire southern hemisphere of the planet. The city of Rio de Janeiro is now entering its most beautiful period, because summer in Rio de Janeiro is synonymous with festivities: Christmas, New Year's Day (one of the most beautiful and festive in the world!) but also Carnival, a period during which the whole world has its eyes on the city, whose festivities are known to be the biggest on the planet.

There are many ways to enjoy the city during the summer! WhereInRio has put together a list of some of the activities you can do during your stay in Rio de Janeiro.

Enjoy the pre-carnival festivities

The pre-carnival festivities mark the summer in Rio and serve as a preview before the great carnival show that will begin on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. During this period, you can enjoy the rehearsals and parties of the Samba schools that open their doors. Among them, the famous Estação Primeira de Mangueira school, one of the oldest and most traditional and winner of the competition last year, but also Salgueiro, Beija-Flor...
It is also an opportunity to take a tour of the famous Sambadrome, where the rehearsal period for the parade begins, and enjoy the excitement and activity that takes place there from December to January.

Enjoy the beaches of Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro and its beaches are known all over the world. Summer is the ideal season to enjoy them. There is Ipanema beach, the most famous beach in Rio, especially for the song "The girl from Ipanema" from 1989, whose covers were also a big hit. It is the place for many activities and lazing around while sipping a coconut agua. Copacabana beach, which draws a curve of 4 kms, and where you can find football-volley players, tourists and cariocas, but also many beach vendors and kiosks where you can sip caipirinhas while enjoying this unique carioca atmosphere.
The Praia Vermelha beach is nestled near the Sugar Loaf cable car station, and is also a must in Rio. At the foot of the Morro da Urca, the narrow Praia Vermelha enjoys a superb view of the rocky coast. It owes its name (vermelha means red) to its coarse sand. Protected by the promontory, it is bathed by usually calm water.
Barra da Tijuca beach, 12 km long, with its turquoise beauty, is a must do in Rio de Janeiro. We recommend that you take advantage of its many bars and delicious fish restaurants lined up along the first few kilometers to the east.

Enjoy Rio de Janeiro's waterfalls

Many cariocas like to take advantage of the waterfalls that the city of Rio offers. It is indeed an ideal place for those who want to soak up the sun, swim and relax in the open air away from the bustle of the beaches in summer.
There is the Paineiras waterfall, which attracts people of all ages, and also the Horto waterfall. To get to this waterfall in the middle of the southern part of the city, a 15-minute walk is enough to enter the Tijuca National Park through Pacheco Leão Street, in the Botanical Garden area.

Enjoy the New Years Eve in Rio de Janeiro

Rio's New Year's Eve party is known as one of the biggest in the world! It is especially known for its incredible fireworks display on Copacabana beach, which is attended by thousands of people on January 31 each year. But many exclusive parties are also held in the city on the 31st.
Take advantage of the end of the year by taking part in one of Rio's most popular parties!
